[Sonnenbrillen] Oh say can you see?

Oktober 22, 2015

Sunglasses are nothing new on the fashion landscape because of their timeless appeal. Not only do they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and prevent you from squinting, there is a huge variety of styles and designs of sunglasses that you can pair with any ensemble you choose to don. Like fragrance, sunglasses are a key accessory for designers to bring to their collections because they are much more financially accessible than their clothes, which can cost thousands of pounds. Sunglasses by our favourite designers, albeit still expensive in the grand scheme of things, allow us to nod to the aesthetic of a brand in a simple way without breaking the bank, and most are extremely durable: a perfect investment that will be with you for years. Sunglasses provide a hint of luxury, a flash of modernity when worn with a heritage outfit, or offer a classic and refined finish to the most on-trend look. We’ve looked at some of our favourite sunglasses designs from the most recent season.

1)      Henry Holland

Henry Holland made a name for himself with his attention-grabbing slogan T-shirts, becoming a firm favourite with It-girls and models like Agyness Deyn, Pixie Geldof and Alexa Chung. Known for his use of bright colour and exciting prints, he is the twenty first century’s answer to pop art and, as a result, his business has expanded and grown. Shop similar styles at Mary Jane Fashion. Holland branched out with a sunglasses collection in 2012 which was met with great success, featuring thick, angular lenses, drawing inspiration from conservative librarian styles but giving them effortless modern updates with jazzy colours and adjustable frames. His latest collection proved to be no exception, using predominantly circular lenses with frames that formed open mouths, or that sported slogans such as ‘Not all that glitters is golden’, self-consciously nodding to the slogans and statements that first garnered him fashion attention in the first place. Playful, fun and modern, Henry Holland’s Instagram-friendly collection of eyewear is a must-have, and have been spotted on everyone from Beyoncé and Rihanna to Rita Ora.

2)      Chanel
Chanel has long been a go-to for high-fashion eyewear, producing elegant and luxurious frames. Chanel designs sunglasses that are effortlessly sophisticated, opting for gracefully wide lenses that first became a big hit in the noughties, and were worn by many famous faces. Their most recent collection has received a lot of attention thanks to its new campaign star, Lily Rose Depp, the teenage daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp. Paradis has had close relations with the French fashion house for years, so the casting of Lily Rose was definitely a family affair. The sunglasses collection retains its classic feel; however, the round lenses lend them contemporaneity, as does the use of diamantés that make up the frame. They suit the youthful tone of the campaign’s star, yet Depp’s smouldering stare and dark makeup keep the sunglasses very much in the realm of luxury.

3)      Miu Miu
The little sister brand to Miuccia Prada’s eponymous family label, Miu Miu is a favourite with style mavens thanks to its polished and poised looks that effortlessly combine youth with searing sexuality. Many carefully selected Hollywood starlets such as Kirsten Dunst, Lupita Nyong’o, Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld have represented the brand, lending the campaigns, drama and intelligence, as well as contributing to the innocent-sexual dichotomy that the brand coyly conveys. The sunglasses collection contributes to this. In their collection, Miu Miu opted for feline cat-eyes frames straight from the sixties as well as round frames that feature traditional tortoise shell. The twist? The bottoms of the frames and the lens have been completely sliced off, leaving a quirky straight line. The overall effect feels knowingly undone and unfinished: the Miu Miu girl, however, dares you to comment that her glasses are missing. She is completely in control and her sunglasses convey this to perfection.
